Cathrine Legardh Quartet

Monday, 03 September 2012 10:16 Published in Artists 2012

Cathrine Legardh Quartet in Thailand

‘Legardh is a huge vocal talent! A sensual voice and a dead-sure phrasing... In just a couple of years she has become one of Denmark's most dependable female singers’ is what the Denmark’s national newspaper, Politiken, claimed just recently. Cathrine Legardh is a true Scandinavian - she grew up in Copenhagen out of Norwegian - Swedish – Danish family roots. She is signed to the legendary label, Storyville Records, who provides a worldwide distribution of her CDs. Having toured widely around the world, however, this
is her first time in Thailand. She will be bringing a wonderful International band, that reflects her musical activities around the globe: The lovely piano player Glyn MacDonald from Perth (AU), the well renowned alto sax player, Sigurdur Flosason from Reykjavik (IS) and the exquisite bass player, Morten Ankarfeldt from her hometown of Copenhagen (DK). The band will be performing a variety of jazz, and Legardh will be singing a mix of standards and her own compositions - maybe even a small handful of old Nordic tunes – but primarily in English. We will be having a taste of her latest album ‘Land & Sky’ which she co-wrote with Sigurdur Flosason during the volcanic eruption in Iceland during 2009. The CD hit the Top 10 of Danish
Jazz Releases in 2011 and was also nominated ‘Jazz Album of the Year’ at the Music Awards 2011 in both Denmark and Iceland:

‘These 20 songs were created during a period of six months - crossing the Atlantic, in cyberspace, over the phone, through travelling and even while held up by ash from an active volcano in Iceland. First lyrics, then music – each word and line carefully nurtured by tone and harmony. When we met by chance during the summer of 2009 we could never have imagined the flow of musical activity about to emerge. Exactly one year after the beginning of the eruption in Eyjafjallajökull, the album ‘Land & Sky’ was ready released. We hiope you like it!’
With love, Legardh & Flosason

‘Cathrine Legardh has through a couple of high quality albums shown great potential. On this, her third album, she enfolds her true talent. There is edge, controlled madness and melody at the same time. ‘LAND & SKY’ is a highly recommendable album and good example of very rare, grand, Danish jazz in a wellknown jazz language, that is not afraid to challenge the familiar or even taking it a step further.’
JAZZNYT, Niels Overgaard (DK)

'Danish singer Cathrine Legardh had instantly turned this male mid-lifer to marshmallow when he heard just one tune… She sings with intonation like a bell, faultless judgment of timing and speech-rhythms, and diction like spring water… Legardh has an unforced, unpushy way...' LONDONJAZZ (at Copenhagen Jazz Festival, July 2011)

'What a relaxing way to spend a summer evening. Legardh’s deep, clear voice was utterly soothing and most impressive, and the quartet's rolling jazz had us tapping our feet and brought out the best in Legardh’s lilting accent... It's safe to say that this charming show left its audience warm and just wanting more.' EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL

‘When you first listen to the voice of this singer you might have the feeling you’re listening to a mature woman, who has a good mileage on the bumpy roads of jazz. However, Cathrine Legardh is 38, an energetic, petite, smiling and intense woman whose blue eyes communicate curiosity and happiness with life... And then there is the timing and the fullness of the trio behind her, flowing from the rich tradition of everlasting swing...’ IVERSEN, CHAIRMAN OF THE BEN WEBSTER FOUNDATION IN DENMARK

The third weeklong Samui International Jazz Music Festival opens on Sunday 14th October at the Amari Palm Reef/ Chaweng. Expect yet another spectacular display of Jazz, a fun week where guests will be treated to fine wine, food and excellent Jazz. The festival is dedicated to the theme of Tropical Jazz and the locations for the various concerts have been especially identified to enhance the tropical feel with guests and performers, which we hope will manage to be both upbeat and laid-back at the same time.

Starting of the festival will be a preview concert of Paulette McWilliams, a Chicago native, who you’ve definitely heard before! She has been on stage and performed with artists like Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross and her discography reads like the who’s who in music history: Everyone from Sammy Davis Jr. to Placido Domingo, with every genre of music in between. Don’t miss her, when she comes to perform on the main-stage of the festival at Chaweng Beach Sat. 20 October – FREE ENTRY!

It was so much fun to have them here last year, so we invited them back: Susan Harmer and her band Tropic Green. 7 band members, 4 nationalities, coming from Japan, Singapore, Cuba and the USA, performing original tunes. You can hear their energetic
performance also on Sunday Oct. 14th.

This years line-up is truly international, with CaboCubaJazz feat. Melissa Fortes and Yerman Aponte from Cape Verde and Venezuela, performing Latin Jazz which for sure will get you up on the feet dancing.

Also performing Peter Beets, from the Netherlands, a world class jazz pianist, who has shared the stage with jazz greats like Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgewater.

From South Africa meet the Karen Devroop Jazz Quartet. Their quartet’s repertoire spans a very broad spectrum of styles and genres ranging from Bebop to Latin and contemporary Jazz. Karen Devroop has just recently appeared as stage act in the US with 'Earth Wind and Fire', 'Chicago', Jill Scott and Queen Latifah.

Any performance by Eddie C means enthusiasm, glamour, warmth and an explosion of energy. In the Netherlands and abroad he is famous for his unconventional interpretations of Jazz, Funk, Latin, Pop and Dance music. Eddie performed through the years in all the leading theaters of Europe with artists such as Sting, Chaka Khan, Candy
Dulfer, Toto, among others.

It's no Jazz Festival in Thailand without our star Koh Mr. Saxman who will take on the stage on Friday 19th October together with the Beets Brothers performing a 'Tribute to the King'.

Get a chance to meet the artists at the Opening Night on Oct. 14 at Amari Palm Reef

CabuCubaJazz

Monday, 30 July 2012 13:41 Published in Artists 2012

In an Inimitable way, the group blends  the melancholy of the morna [Cape Verdean blues], the joyful dance of the [also Cape Verdean] coladera with a generous portion of sweeping Cuban rumba, salsa and adventurous jazz. The result: 100% CaboCubaJazz. Both the listener and the dancer are taken on a journey where desire, passion, subtlety and musical fire alternate. Their debut album Rikeza y Valor [2011] has received enthusiastic response worldwide. After a successful release  tour  as a quintet along the Dutch theaters and clubs,  the 2012 tour  includes  performances in Canada and Norway. The band is extended to an octet format on special request.

De Volkskrant wrote : "[...] nice contrasts between sweetness and fire, and between swaying and punching rhythms. [...] A strong  groovy blend of exciting call and response singing, sensual melodies and soothing harmonies, brightened by strong arrangements and improvisations." For the Samui International Jazz Music Festival 2012, CaboCubaJazz feat. Melissa Fortes from Cape Verde and Yerman Aponte from Venezuela
