Jan Reinen (all-round pianist, composer, arranger, tutor). As the son of well-known trumpetplayer Willem Reinen, he became acquainted with jazz at a very early age. Influenced by many jazz records played at home and of course by his father’s live performances, he started playing the piano atthe age of ten. He then moved onto classical piano and later learned all about jazz theory and harmony by Ellert kramer at the age of fifteen. From 1987 to 1993 he studied jazzpiano at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague with Rob van Kreeveld and Rob van Bavel. From 1993 onwards he continued his study at the Hilversum Conservatory with Henk Elkerbout, where he passed with credit as a performing musician!
During his study in The Hague he accompanied many guest teachers, like Barry Harris, Elaine Elias, Pat Metheny, Deborah Brown, Michael Brecker etc. In march 1996 he played with Michel Petrucciani. In Hilversum he accompanied guest tutorials by Vincent Herring en Bob Mintzer.
Since 1990 he has been active as a als bandleader of his own jazzquartet, with: Simon Rigter- tenosax, Stefan Lievestro- contrabas en Joost van Schaik- drums. With this group he has played regurlarly in the dutch jazzscene, but also at the Adolphe Sax jazzfestival in Dinant (Belgium) in July 1994.
In 1991 he became the regular pianist of the Rotterdam Jazzensemble, lead by Arnoud Gerritse. In 1992 he lead a jamsession at the North Sea Jazzfestival. In may 1993 he won the first prize at the ‘Schak Jazzcompetition’. From ’93 to ’95 he played with the double tenorsax quartet the ‘Schaal van Rigter’. In summer 1996 he accompanied Max Teawhistle at the North Sea Jazzfestival. In the early hours after the festival you will find him at the piano during the illustrious jamsessions at the Bel Air Hotel, where he jammed with internatioinal celebrities like Jon Faddis, Roy Hargrove, George Benson, Marcus Miller and many others.
Since 1990 Jan has been active as a sessionleader, programmer & organiser in The Hague. Because of that he gained a lot of experience in accompanying various soloists. From 1990 to 1996 he organised concerts and jamsessions in various places like ‘Millers’,’Gabors’,’Pater’, ‘Palace Pub’,’de haagse Kunstkring’,’Bierkelder’,’Haags Uit’,’Roezemoez’. In the autumn of 1994 he organised concerts in the Pepijn theatre with well-known guest soloists like Ben van den Dungen, Jarmo Hoogendijk, Eric Vloeimans, Ruud Breuls, John Ruocco, Bart van Lier, Ben Herman, Fred Leeflang etc. On 7 december 1994 an article about Jan’s activities was published in the ‘Haagse Courant’, written by journalist Bert Jansma. On 7 december ’96 a portrait of Jan was broadcast in the NPS television-program Urbania.
He is no stranger in the field of popmusic either! From 1990 to 1992 he played in the jazzrockband To The Limit. In 1993 he participated Marcel Dorenbos’ ‘Clockwork Orange Fusionproject’! Since 1994 Jan plays on a regular basis with the Jazzdance group Planet Groove lead by Fernando Lewis with Aram Kersbergen- basguitar (Kane) en Chris Strik on drums. This group played in Monaco’s most prestigious club ‘Stars & Bars’! Jan also plays with a lot of different goups in the party and weddingcircuit like Jamento, Mo’Music, Unit 7.
At a regional level Jan is very active in promoting young talented musicians. He was up for the post ‘Mayor of Night life’ in The Hague, a specially created duty to stimulate the musical and out-going scene in The hague. From this position he aims at promoting jazz in the area. He was one of the editors of the Nightpapers. In which nightlife and entertainment was reviewed.
Since 1999 he is living in Arnhem where reinitiated jazzmusic! At the Musis Sacrum he organises concerts with famous artists like Eef Albers, Jarmo Hoogendijk, Philip Harper, Jasper Blom, Jilt Jansma. Every sundaynight he is leading jamsessions at the ‘Katoenclub’, which functions now as the centerstage for jazz and blues in the eastern part of Holland!
Jan is also a experieced piano and keyboardteacher! He specialises in improvisation lessons and combocoaching. He teaches at different schools. He stopped for a while to play on a contract basis on a cruiseliner the ’Monarch of the Seas’ from the Royal Carribean in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Unfortunately this shipped ended up being wrecked on a coralreef in Sint Martin! Since then he prefers to teach at home. Sometimes he replaces collegues on High schools for music.
Nowadays Jan plays with: the New Jan Reinen Trio (with Eric Surmenian-bass & Joost van Schaik-drums, with Jasper Blom as possible guest), Jan Reinen Quartet, Bart Wirtz/Nico Schepers Quintet (the winners of the Erasmus Jazzcompetition 1999 in Rotterdam, Jan was voted for best soloist!), Planet Groove, Spaszmataszm, Jeroen Pek Quartet . As a free-lancer he plays with Deborah Carter, Rick Margitza (ex Miles Davis bandmember!) the Midland Big Band, French Kiss, the Behringer Brothers, Combo Frenk Gort, Showbizz City and so on!
